Mull Exploration Week Grade of Trip and walks - easy to adventurous A wild landscape of rugged buttresses, cliffs and moorland with long rugged and intricate coastlines dominate the Ilse of Mull. The human communities tend to cling to the sea where shelter and food can be found and Mull is famous for its seafood, probably why the sea eagles, ottes and seals are so common around this coastline. The interior mountains offer some of the most outstanding scenery and wildlife in Scotland with red deer and pine marten abundant in some of the glens. White tailed sea eagles are regularly encountered and golden eagles are often with their young in late July-August, balancing on the wind, the tail feathers mastering the breeze in their search for mountain hares and other prey. Red deer are also frequently seen in this truly wild landscape and it is not uncommon to see large herds grazing along the shoreline where the better grazing can be found.. Otters are frequently seen on the coast feeding on shellfish and occasionally can be approached quite closely as they are more habituated to humans in Mull. The coast supports many seabirds and there are many interesting species such as manx shearwater and puffins along the coastline. We explore the coastal fringes where there are hidden caves, amazing rock formations and geological anomolies, a result of the diversity and complex rock types. Whale and cetacean watching is another spectacle on Mull that should not be missed. We have a trip with Sealife Surveys, around the coast from Tobermory on the northern tip of Mull, giving easy access to the most amazing coastline and sealife. Among the many animals we may see are pilot whales, orcas, mincke whale and basking shark with common and bottlenose dolphins also seen regularly.
